Red Bull Notes: Shaun Wright-Phillips “just training,” trialist update, more

Despite his continued presence in and around camp, the New York Red Bulls insist that Shaun Wright-Phillips, the better known half of the Wright-Phillips clan, is not trialing with the club.

“He is just here to train,” Jesse Marsch told reporters Tuesday afternoon.

It seems a rather odd declaration from the Red Bull boss, particularly as the former QPR man continues to get valuable training minutes in with the first team. In fact, Marsch talks about Wright-Phillips as if he were already part of the side.

“He’s good around the goal. When he gets chances to hit a shot or set up a play he is sharp in that way,” he said. “It’s been fun having him here. I think he has had a good impact on the team in terms of anytime you have a big time player, there is excitement, and playing with him and training — he has come here and worked hard to get his fitness going so, its been good having him.”

Nevertheless, Shaun Wright-Phillips continues his Red Bull stint — no matter how enigmatic it may be. He was released earlier this month by QPR. He has not been connected to any other club worldwide other than the Red Bulls. He was in town for brother Bradley’s wedding last week. Whether his stay is more than just a training stint remains to be seen.

CHANGES COMING vs. RSL; Enter Sean Davis

Sacha Kljestan is ruled out against Real Salt Lake Wednesday night. Lloyd Sam is as well.

But regardless of their availability, Marsch insists he was still expecting “changes” to the roster following the club’s devastating loss to the Whitecaps this weekend.

“With all the good things we have done this year, now that we are in a little bit of a bad stretch, we have to just figure out how to step on the field and have every guy want it a little bit more,” he said. “I expect to see an impassioned performance from all our players and expect, from the first minute, go on the field and compete at the highest level.”

One player that will benefit from the starting absences is Sean Davis; a USL standout who has impressed in limited minutes with the first team.

“Sasha is an important guy for us. It’s not just his on field performances but the presence within the team,” Marsch said. “It won’t be easy to replace him, but we have used Sean in that spot a little bit, and even if it is not natural for him to play, he is a bit of a deeper guy, but when he plays in there, he provides us a defensive presence and the ability to win more balls in there.

“The more we can make it hard on Salt Lake in the middle of the field, the better chance we have of winning this game. I expect him to help us in many ways and be ready to go.”

Trialists Tre Williams, Andre Fortune and Speedy Williams are no longer playing with the senior team. However, that doesn’t mean the Red Bulls have lost interest in the trio. “We are keeping them around,” Marsch said. “They are being looked at by the USL Pro team. We are evaluating as we go. We think they have done well but no decision yet.”

Trialist Will Packwood, meanwhile, remains in training with the club.

  • Marsch on changing the Red Bulls’ fortunes: “It’s about the mentality right now … We have to step on the field and, as much as we want the game bad, that we don’t get overzelous and don’t get in trouble with cards and dig ourselves a hole in different ways. I expect this team to be ready to step on the field, know what it takes, and come away with the result [against Salt Lake].”
  • Marsch on adjusting the Red Bulls tactics: “When you are winning, sometimes it masks things that need to be surfaced. We are addressing them as they go. At the same time, while the results haven’t come, I don’t believe there is a lack of belief in what we are doing. … It’s a matttr of strengthening ourselves so when we do get out of this, we are ready to launch ourselves.”
  • Marsch on trusting Bradley Wright-Phillips on PKs: “Bradley is our guy. He is going to step up and take it again. There are no concerns there at all.”

  • Speedy Williams? Christ this club can’t be serious???? Just squeaked by RSL with nine men and they are considering someone called Speedy…

  • i guess better than someone called ” Tiny”!!

  • bleeckerst

Red Bulls should be looking to the photo for this article. SWP plus Robinho wouldn’t be too bad as DP signings.
