U.S. National team star and Livingston, N.J. native Jozy Altidore paid tribute to the 26 victims of the Newtown school shooting Friday by inscribing their names on his yellow cleats during AZ Alkmaar’s match against F.C. Twente. The club also allowed him to wear a black armband to commemorate the tragedy.
“I wanted to honor the kids and adults lost during this tragedy,” Altidore said. “Even though I’m thousands of miles away, it’s something that affected me, my family and the people of the Netherlands. At the end of the day, this is just a little way for me to show I’m thinking of everyone in Newtown and back home.”
Altidore has also contacted members of the Newtown community to see how he can personally contribute to their recovery moving forward.
“We have reached out to the board of directors for the Newtown Soccer Club, the editor of The Newtown Bee newspaper and members of the community,” he said. “We just wanted to let them know we are here and ready to help the community in any way we can.”
