Pirlo Regrets Not Playing for Barca or Madrid

Yes ladies and gentlemen, even Andrea Pirlo can have regrets about his career.

The six-time Serie A champion and World Cup winning NYCFC midfielder spoke with the Spanish paper Marca about his regret having never played for either Barcelona or Real Madrid.

“I still have a thorn in my side at not having played for Real Madrid or Barcelona,” said Pirlo to the publication. “Playing there is a dream for every player.”

Pirlo’s career speaks for itself. He is a multiple time Italian Serie A champion with spells at AC Milan and Juventus, producing a total of six league titles and a pair of Champions League cups. On top of that, he was a World Cup winner with the Italian national team in 2006.

So what is there to regret?

Pirlo was a target for Real Madrid back in 2006 when Fabio Capello helmed Los Blancos. The timing seemed right as AC Milan had just been embroiled in a match-fixing scandal that rocked Serie A. However, the move never happened after AC Milan renewed Pirlo’s contract.

“Was I disappointed?” said Pirlo. “Well it’s true that unfortunately they wouldn’t let me leave, but at at the same time I spent 10 years at Milan, winning everything there was to win.”

Interest was also there from Real Madrid’s Catalan rival Barcelona. In 2010 Pep Guardiola made a move for the Serie A legend but came up short. He joined Juventus instead on a three-year deal.

“I needed another team with a new project, but still a winning one,” said Pirlo. “Juve were perfect as they hadn’t won in a long time and were making their debut in their new stadium.”
