Plan B: Cosmos turn to Gillingham FC after Watford snub

Watford FC cancelled plans (and a contract) for a friendly against the New York Cosmos upon the team’s arrival in England, preferring instead to host fellow Pozzo-owned sister club Granada of La Liga. With all of one friendly on their ledger, the club frantically tried to rework their deal with The Hornets but to no avail.

In desperate need of preseason action just days prior to opening kick, the team has found itself a replacement match.

The New York Cosmos will now face League One side Gillingham FC at Priestfield Stadium on Friday. The match will be a closed-door friendly, starting at 4pm.

Gillingham FC gained promotion last year after winning the League Two title. The club suffered through many financial straights over the past decade but has managed to stabilize over the past two years and are now in ascension.

The Cosmos begin their row of friendlies Wednesday evening against Leyton Orient.
