US logoThe United States men’s national team left New Jersey with its head hung low. The World Cup qualifying match at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J., ended in defeat on Friday night as Costa Rica outplayed the U.S.

Goalkeeper

Tim Howard wasn’t called upon often but when he was needed, he was nowhere to be found. His lack of communication with his center backs led to both goals. Grade: C

Defenders

Graham Zusi did all he could. He offered smart tackling, accurate crossing and energy, but it wasn’t enough. Grade: B

Geoff Cameron had a disaster of a game. Terrible passing and awful vision led to multiple mistakes that resulted in goals. Grade: D

Tim Ream was caught sleeping more times than not. The lack of communication with Cameron and Howard made him look out of place and disjointed. Grade: C-

Jorge Villafaña did not produce. He was frequently caught too high up the field and was unable to recover from his mistakes. He was subbed off early in the second half for Clint Dempsey. Grade: C

Midfielders

Michael Bradley had a quiet night. He seemed to fade as the match progressed and failed to plug the middle defensively. Grade: C+

Darlington Nagbe offered energy and opportunities but was unable to produce. His lack of connection with teammates led to unnecessary turnovers. Grade: B-

Christian Pulisic spent the entire match getting his ankles clipped. Costa Rica’s tactic to stay tight on him worked. He was unable to make a valuable impact. Grade: B-

Fabian Johnson was nowhere to be found. He ignited a few counter attacks early in the first half but faded later. Grade: C+

Forwards

Bobby Wood pressured Costa Rica’s backline. His energy was laudable. His inability, however, to provide offensive production led to frustration. Grade: B

Jozy Altidore played the target man role well in the first half, but once Costa Rica scored, he switched off. He earned a silly yellow card in the second half, which results in him missing the next qualifier. Grade: B-

Substitutes

Clint Dempsey spent the bulk of his time in the game either on the ground or complaining to the referee. His frustration overtook his game. Grade: C

Jordan Morris subbed on too late to make an impact. Grade: Incomplete

Paul Arriola had no time to make an impact. Grade: Incomplete

Coach

Bruce Arena got it wrong. His defensive pairing of Ream and Cameron was awful and his offense couldn’t produce. He’ll need to clean up his lineup if he hopes to get a win Tuesday in Honduras. Grade: C
