Player Ratings: USA 1-0 Colombia

USMNT

by PATRICK MacDONALD

The U.S. will have to wait until their next Copa America to finish better than fourth.

That being said, they put in an effort (save for one left back) that should make a nation proud, leaving it all on the field in what many would consider a glorified friendly. They certainly redeemed themselves for their Copa opener against Colombia, but still lost 1-0.

With the U.S. run coming to an end, it can be said that the future is largely bright. The question remains, can Klinsmann build on it. After all, he did play a centerback at left back, displaying once again his maddening tendency to play guys out of position.

But that’s another story for another time. For now, let’s take a look at the players.

Tim Howard – GK: 6
Had a few nice saves and good command of his box. Not much he could do on the goal.

DeAndre Yedlin – RB: 5
A bit erratic with some overly aggressive plays. Had a few dangerous forays forward though.

Geoff Cameron – CB: 6
Solid time on the back line holding Columbia to one.

Matt Besler – CB: 6
No one’s forgetting John Brooks, but it’s good to know Besler can fill in admirably when needed.

Michael Orozco – LB: 1
Didn’t contain his side on the goal. Nearly cost the U.S. a second with some soft defense. Nothing going forward. And of course that red card was just dumb, dumb, dumb.

Gyassi Zardes – RM: 5
At times actually displayed some nice touch tonight, but didn’t cause the Colombian defense many problems.

Michael Bradley – CM: 5
Didn’t have any cringe inducing moments that have peppered his play this tournament, nor was he the game changer he’s oft been in the seemingly far too distant past.

Jermaine Jones – CM: 6
Hustled all over the place — the way that he always does. But his passing was lacking in the final third.

Alejandro Bedoya – LM: 5
Was a bit late tracking back on Colombia’s goal. Essentially played defense for Colombia on a Bobby Wood chance. That being said, had a nice spot or two.

Clint Dempsey – F: 6
Active as always, shredded the Colombian defense on a few passes only to have his efforts go unrewarded.

Bobby Wood – F:5
Got into good positions, had a few good chances, was just unlucky on a few, gunshy on others.

Substitutions:

Christian Pulisic – LM: 6
Had a slide tackle that led to a dangerous chance — botched by Wood. Another few dangerous passes in build up also nearly paid off. If this kid isn’t starting in the next qualifiers against weak competition, Klinsmann needs his head examined.

Darlington Nagbe – CM: 6
Not perfect but his effect on the buildup play towards the end was noticeable, taking on the Colombian midfield and completing a few passes.
