New York Red Bulls playoff bound after DC United win

It is rare when your biggest rival lends you a hand, but the New York Red Bulls will take it.

DC United made quick work of a flailing Houston side 3-1 on Sunday, putting the Dynamo’s playoff hopes out to pasture — and the Red Bulls into the postseason. It is the team’s fifth postseason run in a row since missing the competition back in 2009. It also makes New York a perfect five for five in postseason qualification since they begun play at Red Bull Arena.

While it took a DC victory to get New York into the playoffs, it can hardly be considered “backing” into the postseason. The Red Bulls earned their spot by replicating what they did in last year’s Supporters’ Shield race; heating up at the right time. The Red Bulls are 5-1-1 in regular season play since the beginning of September. To put that into context, the once also-rans entered September with a 7-8-10 record.

With a tight Eastern Conference competition, New York still has a chance to finish anywhere from the fifth place wild card spot to second place. New England (second place) and Sporting KC (third place) still have a mathematical shot at the Eastern crown, where DC leads all teams by six points. Depending on results, New York could be hosting a playoff match as early as Wednesday, October 29th at Red Bull Arena.

New York will take on fifth place Columbus at 3 PM this Sunday in a match that will see playoff contenders jockeying to stave off a Wild Card spot.
