New York City FC have the slimmest of chances for a postseason berth.

Step one in making that possibility a reality? Rooting on the Red Bulls.

NYCFC have lost control of their playoff destiny, and are forced to rely on the Montreal Impact to tank their two matches this week if they hope to remain in contention. Their first match comes against NYCFC rival, New York Red Bulls. The Red Bulls are in the thick of the Supporters’ Shield race with a slim one point lead in the standings. Montreal, meanwhile, hopes to clinch their first postseason since 2013, and their second playoff appearance in four years.

Montreal is one of five club’s playing during the international break, taking on the Red Bulls on Wednesday and the lowly Colorado Rapids this weekend. A victory in either match will book Montreal’s place in the postseason. Two draws will also do the trick.

A pair of losses would not only keep NYCFC in contention, but it would also burn Montreal’s two games in hand, leveling them with NYCFC at 32 games played. The Impact currently hold 42 pts. in the sixth and final playoff spot while NYCFC rides eighth place with 37 pts. Orlando City are currently seventh with 41 points, also surrendering a pair of games in hand to the Impact.

He’s got a two year deal and he’s the leading goal scorer. He’s not going anywhere plus he’s gone on record saying that him and his family love it in NYC.

“Montreal is one of five club’s playing during the international break, taking on the Red Bulls on Wednesday and the lowly Colorado Rapids this weekend. A victory in either match will book Montreal’s place in the postseason. Two draws will also do the trick.” How so? After tonight’s game, Montreal is sitting on 42 points. If they win against Colorado, they will have played 32 games and be on 45 points. Orlando is currently on 41 points, having played 32 games as well…so they could still conceivably knock Montreal out and take the last playoff spot in the East. I think what you meant to say is that a win by Montreal guarantees that NYCFC is out of contention for the playoffs.
