USL Week 7 Preview: Battle of Undefeated Teams

Richmond Kickers USL

USL is headed towards a climactic week seven as two undefeated teams face off in a chance at clear dominance in the Eastern Conference. Conversely, several winless teams hope to alter their fate in tough fixtures against successful sides. So far this year, the USL has had several big upsets, so Montreal and Real Monarchs will certainly be looking to get their seasons going after less than stellar starts.

Clash of the USL Titans (or Undefeated Teams)

Three teams sit atop the Eastern Conference with undefeated records. Two of them, Richmond and Charleston, play head-to-head this Saturday in Virginia with first place on the line.

The Battery currently sit in third place, having played one game less than the Kickers and Rhinos above them. Both teams head into the game with stats on their side as Charleston is second in the conference in goals scored with eleven and Richmond in second in least goals allowed with three.

Going into the game, both teams will feel confident after decent Week Six results. The Battery handed Wilmington their second loss of the season while Richmond toppled the lowly Montreal. Charleston will definitely feel like they have the advantage having not dropped any points away from South Carolina.

Orange County Makes the MLS 2 Rounds in Week 7

After a stunning victory in Week Six over reigning champs Sacramento, the Orange County Blues will venture to Portland and Seattle to play MLS 2 sides within a 48 hour period. First they will play a Seattle team that got back on their winnings ways after a rough trip away from home in Week Five. They have been undefeated at home this season and are tied for most goals scored in the league with fifteen.

Portland is also going into their game with momentum after defeating the Austin Aztex on the road 2-0. Orange County is certainly not a stranger to playing teams with momentum. For the early part of the year, they flew under the radar as one of the smaller teams in the Western Conference, but their victory of Sacramento has certainly opened some eyes, especially given the team’s strong road performance.

Montreal Hopes for a Big Upset

It goes without saying that the start of Montreal’s season has been a complete disaster. The team sits winless at the bottom of the Eastern Conference and has scored only one goal through their first four games of the season. Rochester on the other hand has been dominant, carrying over their oppressive defense from last year and mixing in a solid offensive force that has scored eleven goals already while only surrendering three.

Even though Rochester is traveling to Montreal, they should still be seen as favorites. Three of Montreal’s four losses have come at home and welcoming the first place Rhinos is a less than desirable fixture. Head coach Philippe Eullaffroy will certainly look at teams like Tulsa for inspiration to topple the undefeated team.
