USL Week 13 Preview: Standings Are Tight

USL Writer

Week 13 is a condensed group of fixtures as seven USL teams prepare to enter into the next round of the US Open Cup starting on the 16th.

With that is the added pressure of some tight races in both conferences. Teams like Richmond and the LA Galaxy II could leapfrog into first place should results around the league go their way. There is also the return of a USL powerhouse as Rochester looks to remain undefeated against very stiff competition.

Rochester Faces Tough Louisville Team

Louisville City FC has been one of the more successful expansion teams that isn’t an MLS2 side. Currently, they sit fourth in the Eastern Conference and have proven to be stiff competition to heavy hitters in the league. Draws earlier in the season with Richmond and Rochester mean they are certainly not a team to be taken lightly. However, the opposition is the toughest in the league. The Rhinos have not only remained undefeated but they haven’t allowed a goal in three home games. Louisville is hoping to break that streak and hopefully add a loss to a team that has gone eleven straight without surrendering more than a point.

The key to the game for Louisville will be their staunch defense. Leaving out the three goals they surrendered against rival St. Louis, this team hasn’t surrendered more than one goal on the road. They also haven’t lost a game since May 2nd, the only loss they’ve suffered this season. Rochester represents a mighty obstacle but one that Louisville will certainly feel confident in overcoming given their recent form.

LA’s Road Trip Could Move Them Atop the West

The Galaxy II will play two rough road games this weekend. The first against a Seattle Sounders FC 2 team that was rocked for five goals in their first home loss last week. After that, they travel to Vancouver to take on a Whitecaps 2 team that hopes to rebound from a tough loss to Colorado Springs. Should the Galaxy win their two games, they will move atop the Western Conference no matter the results of the teams around them. If that isn’t motivation enough, the Galaxy II have won six of their last seven games, making them a force in the conference.

Tough Road for the Kickers

Richmond could also see themselves on top of the Eastern Conference but they will need max points from their two fixtures this weekend. The first is against a Charleston Battery team that is one point above them in the standings. The two teams clashed earlier in the season to a 2-2 draw at City Stadium. The rematch will be in South Carolina where the Battery haven’t lost this season. After that they will host the staggering FC Montreal who are showing signs of life despite their dismal record.

Two wins for the Kickers would put them into first place should Louisville upset Rochester. If not they will hold a share of the top spot in the East with a group of tough road games approaching.
