PRO hires Howard Webb to oversee video replays

By Ryan Brister

The Professional Referee Organization has hired Howard Webb to be the manager of its video assistant replay operations.

Webb will oversee the education and training of referees to serve as video assistants when a call on the field requires a replay. The VAR system allows referees to review goal, penalty, and red card decisions.

Major League Soccer has been trialing VAR during its preseason. The league hopes to implement to VAR system, which is already in place in the USL, for the latter half of the 2017 season.

Webb spent 25 years as an on-field referee, during which he presided over Premier League, Champions League, and World Cup matches. He refereed the World Cup final in 2010. Howard-Webb-557816
