Puerto Rico FC may be making its debut at the midway mark of the 2016 NASL season, but that hasn’t stopped the expansion side from making its first two signings.

With owner Carmelo Anthony on hand, the club announced on Tuesday afternoon that Puerto Rican national team member Joseph ‘Jackie’ Marrero and NASL veteran Pedro Mendes will suit up for PRFC when it kicks off in July.

Marerro, 22, is a native of San Juan, Puerto Rico and most recently played for Kultsu in the lower divisions of Finland. The midfielder also played on the island, first for the Puerto Rico Islanders during their final season in 2012 and then for Academia Quintana in 2013.

Since making his debut as a teenager for Puerto Rico’s senior national team in 2011, Marrero has earned 18 caps and recorded seven goals for the program.

Mendes, 25, moves to Puerto Rico after having a tremendous Fall Season for the Atlanta Silverbacks last year. The attacker signed with Atlanta in July after sitting out the Spring Season and went to record seven goals through 19 appearances.

The Brazilian made his professional debut with the Silverbacks in 2012. He remained there for two seasons before moving on be a part of Indy Eleven’s inaugural roster in 2014. Mendes left Indy halfway through that season after making 12 appearances and joined Minnesota United FC.
