In a week filled with controversy for New York’s MLS franchises, even player re-signings are making headlines.

The New York Red Bulls announced on Friday that the club has agreed to terms with a contract extension for midfielder Lloyd Sam as well as purchasing the rights to defender/midfielder Ambroise Oyongo on a permanent basis from Cameroonian club Rainbow FC Bamenda.

Red Bull fans will be happy to see two key contributors from 2014 returning to the club. However, the situation surrounding Oyongo’s return has left fans and media alike scratching their collective heads. As expressed by the club in a press release in March of 2014, Oyongo’s signing was not announced as a loan deal, leaving many fans shocked to see that New York have only now purchased his rights.

The nature of Oyongo’s signing aside, the Cameroonian’s return will be a welcome sight as the promising left sided player showed great promise in his first year in New York.

“Ambroise is a promising and versatile young player that adds value at multiple positions and showed he has the ability to defend and get forward in the attack,” Red Bulls Sporting Director Ali Curtis stated.

In Sam, the Red Bulls secure the services of one the team’s most consistent performers from 2014. The speedy winger and fan-favorite was a game changing talent that notched 5 goals and 10 assists over his 40 appearances in all competitions for New York.

“Lloyd has been a key player for this club the past few seasons and we’re very excited to have him in a Red Bull uniform for the coming years,” said Curtis. “Lloyd is a very dynamic player on the wing and provides a great attacking threat for us.”
