Queens Boro Prez approves Citi Field Mall; another blow for soccer stadium

If you were wondering why Queens Borough Presidential Candidate Leroy Comrie (D-St. Albans) sounded so sure in his opposition to a Flushing Stadium, here is your answer.

Current, long-time serving Queens Borough President Helen Marshall gave her blessing to a 1.4-million-square-foot shopping mall in the vast parking area surrounding Citifield.

What’s the correlation between a soccer stadium and this proposed mall? Land. The Flushing Soccer Stadium, while centrally located, is woefully deprived of parking land, making it imperative for the project to share space with Citifield.

A mall takes the carpet – or in this case, asphalt – right up from underneath the feet of MLS.

With Marshall’s endorsement, and the willingness of Community Board 7 to push the project through, the Sterling Equities and the Related Co. project nears fruition as part of a $3 billion redevelopment model for Willets Point.

The project now heads to the City Planning Commission for approval, and then, to the City Council for the final stamp of approval.
