Quick Thoughts: New York City FC 1-1 Orlando City

COMMENTARY: After a nearly two year build up, New York City FC finally played their inaugural match, drawing Orlando City in front of 62k fans at the Citrus Bowl.

So what did we learn from the experience?

For starters, NYCFC is not the super club so many MLS fans feared when Manchester City and the New York Yankees joined to bring forth the league’s 20th franchise.  In fact, for large spells, they seemed rather pedestrian; a run-of-the-mill MLS competitor in every way.

That isn’t an insult to the blue team, mind you.  Jason Kreis had his men ready to compete from the opening whistle.  However, one would be remiss not to focus on the team’s shortcomings.  After all, save Mix Diskerud’s moment of brilliance and a late half drive from the visitors, Orlando City enjoyed most of the control and danger in this match.
