RBNY Optimist: Thierry Henry…Stop. Appreciate. Repeat.

rbnyoptimistThe New York Red Bulls are on a roll.

Are all cylinders firing? Well, get back to me on that one, but they are finding a way. They’re putting together wins and holding off the opposition. It’s a good time to be an Optimist because the team is making us look good. They are confirming our confidence in them and holding the “Grumpy Gills” at bay.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s always SOMETHING to complain about, and complainers will complain (“We’ve won 5 of 6? Well, did you notice we are named after an energy drink? That’s ridiculous!!!”).

While we are in this state of grace, this moment in time when there’s not much to be done to counteract the naysayers other than “watch the team,” I’ve decided it’s time to take a moment to admire all that we have in front of us. And by that, I mean it’s time to truly appreciate our Leader, our Captain, our Legend, Thierry Henry.

Over the last few years, he’s been a rock. He’s shown talent that clearly put him in the top echelon of current (and all time) MLS players. His skills are unmatched, his desire to win unbounded, his ability to shock and awe, well, shocking and awing.

So, let’s take a look back at some of the highlights. Let’s take a moment to really, truly appreciate what we have here now that, taking a long view, we won’t have for very much longer. The five best RBNY moments from Thierry Henry (that I can find on You Tube).

5) First up? Henry vs. Chicago Fire, 2011: This is classic Henry. Take the pass. Open the hips. Strike with inside of the right foot. Curl into far post. Um, goal.

4) Again, sorry Chicago Fire of 2012: An amazing display of control and shoot. Chest it down, and hit it on the half volley, and off the post for good measure. In. The. Net.

3) Henry vs. The New England Revolution, 2011: I like to call this “The Cutback”. This is really an incredible example of Henry at work for the Red Bulls. They needed a goal. He takes the pass and does all that he needs to get an open shot on net, including the sharpest cutback this side of Thunder Mountain. Follow it all up with a left footed pass into the side netting. And….thank you very much.

2) Henry vs. Montreal, 2013: This one is still fresh in our minds. For those that were there (yes, me too!), we can just close our eyes and still picture it. It’s THAT fresh. For those that are naysaying with “It happens all the time in Europe.” or “It’s not really a bicycle kick”…well, shut up. It doesn’t matter. This is a pure display of skill and creativity. Yes, even Henry himself will tell you that he’s been attempting this ever since he got here and just hasn’t had the luck to complete it. All of that really doesn’t matter. There are only a handful of players in the MLS that would even attempt this (including Juan “Swagudelo” who, I think, has tried it in every match since he came into the MLS to no avail), and even fewer to can actually succeed at it.

1) The Olympico (vs. Columbus, 2012): No commentary needed. I LOVE this slow motion version. Perfection personified. I can just watch this over and over and over again. It never gets old. This is just 100% class. And unlike the one above, I’m sure many think to attempt it, but few actually try. And fewer actually succeed. If you don’t watch any of the others…just watch this. Twenty two seconds of amazing.

We are riding high now, but there will be moments in the season when we feel like nothing can go right; that we won’t win another match again for the entire year. Do me a favor. Bookmark this page, and when that moment comes, hit that bookmark and watch all five of these goals. The New York Red Bulls have Thierry Henry. He won’t be here forever, but he’s here right now.

Watch him. Cheer him. appreciate him. He deserves your admiration, and you deserve his unmatched talents.

I wish you had included Henry’s “disgust goal” against Columbus from last year. We’re up 3-0 and Columbus scores a goal. He gets the ball at the top of the box, shoots, and then turns away in disgust even before the ball is in the back of the net… not celebrating.

  • Honored to see #TH14 play & I’ve been at #RBA for a hat trick, Olimpico, & a bicycle kick goal! http://t.co/YfejLYS0Lz by @RBNYOptimist

I would have add the amazing lob against Toronto of last year at RBA and probably the left foot goal against Dallas in 2001, he is simply amazing.

  • Appreciating away – left a smile on my face
