RBNY Optimist: What Now?

rbnyoptimistThese are challenging days for the Optimists among us.

Last week’s match against the Chicago Fire (Fire. Fire. Fire. Fire. Fire.) was disappointing to say the least. Things were looking up going into the match, and our expectations were never higher for a long-awaited win in the black hole called Toyota Park. But, alas, it was not to be as “This is Peggy…” Luyindula still hasn’t found his finishing form, and the team’s defense and goalkeeping again left us wanting at the end.

This is not the time to hang our heads in defeat, however. There is no time when optimism is needed more than when the team is not winning and the forces of pessimism are marshaling to convince us that the season is over. That there is no hope over the horizon. That this team is old, worn out, and never going to come together.

Well then, let’s perform a little thought experiment.

What if all the Negative Nellies out there are right? What if our players are old, broken down middle-agers? What if our goalkeepers never get their act together? What if Coach Petke (MIKE PETKE!!) is ultimate Head Coach “n00b,” unable to make the right tactical changes or get his highly paid DPs to perform to his liking?

I don’t believe any of that, but for the sake of our experiment, let’s say it’s all true. Let’s say that this is going to be an awful season. Think 2009, or even 1999.

What does it really mean to YOU? How will you react? Will it change the way you root for the team? Will you stop showing up for games? Stop watching on TV? Throw your hands up and carefully apply the “That’s So Metro” car magnet to your trunk?

Or, will you take another route? Maybe you’ll keep rooting on your team. Maybe you can still introduce your friends to Red Bull Arena. Maybe you’ll find some glimmer of hope, some flickering ember of an unexpectedly good performance from a player, a beautiful through ball from Juninho, a last ditch clearance off the line by a defender.

Will you give up, or will you soldier on?

Moments like these are times to take a gut check. On yesterday’s Sirius XM afternoon talk show, Counter Attack, Jimmy Nielsen went on and on about how the KC crowd never stops supporting their team — win, lose or draw. Isn’t that the kind of fan base we should strive to be? I know some of you will say that New York fans will never be that way. If you want to believe that, it’s fine with me.

I’ll be over there in my seat at Red Bull Arena, soaking up the atmosphere (Thanks, South Ward!), enjoying each pass and tackle, and cheering to the end.
