With yesterday’s news that Paulo Sousa apparently declined the Red Bulls’ Head Coaching offer and with no other options on the horizon, things appear dire. You can practically hear the sound of a million hands wringing and heads of hair being pulled out across the Internets.
It feels like a great time to be negative, snarky and downright pessimistic about the whole situation doesn’t it? First, no coach for the Combine. Then, no coach for the SuperDraft. Then, the Supplemental Draft. And now, TRAINING CAMP?
Surely we are doomed.
Ah, but if you are a fellow Optimist, you’re just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round. In fact, you really love to watch them roll – especially when you have an idea of the opportunities these situations can create.
Out of these seemingly disastrous circumstances comes one overwhelming positive. The longer Mike Petke serves as the HC of RBNY (Belicheck joke? Check.), the greater the chances that Andy Roxburgh sees that he is more than capable of doing the job.
So far, Petke has seemed to handle himself fantastically, garnering interest and attention for his quality picks in the two drafts, handling press relation duties smoothly and just generally running things like a “boss.”
Could he use some experienced help? No doubt, but Sousa or whoever they bring over from Europe could use just as much help figuring out MLS.
To me, it’s a wash. And why not go ahead and give the guy a chance to prove or disprove what he can do? He’s a beloved team legend. He deserves the opportunity.
All we are saying, is give Mike a chance.
