A first half own goal by Colorado’s Eric Miller was the deciding goal in New York Red Bulls’ 1-0 win over the Rapids at Red Bull Arena. It was the team’s home opener¬†and a strong performance was punctuated by Rapids goalkeeper Tim Howard keeping New York off the scoreboard.

“I’ve seen enough of him to know how good he is,” said Marsch on Howard’s performance. “He’s a big-save keeper. So I wasn’t surprised to see that.”

Howard stopped seven shots on goal with New York totalling 13 in the game. New York dominated possession and looked the more dangerous side over the course of 90 minutes. The new striking combination of Bradley Wright-Phillips and Derrick Etienne Jr. worked fluidly with Kljestan and Royer playing off the forwards with dangerous passing. New York’s best opportunity came in the 23rd minute when Wright-Phillips was stopped on a point-blank opportunity by Tim Howard.

The game’s only goal came just before the halftime whistle when Sal Zizzo’s cross found the foot of a diving Eric Miller. That deflection proved to be the game’s only goal, handing the Red Bulls their second win off of an own goal in two straight games this season.

New York remains undefeated with six points in their first two games. Next up the team will travel to Seattle to play the MLS Cup Champions Seattle Sounders FC.
