A mostly USL and trialist Red Bull team lost to the New England Revolution, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon in the finale of the Desert Diamond Cup in Arizona. Second-half goals from Kelyn Rowe and Lee Nguyen locked up the game.

Despite a record of 0-2-1 in the competition, Red Bulls II Coach John Wolyniec and and the club have a solid idea of what they have in their academy and USL system. Zeiko Lewis remains one of the more interesting players, but he has yet to be signed despite starting in all of the recent preseason games.

The first half consisted of New England’s experience taking the spotlight. New York’s athleticism was on display with players like Vincent Bezecourt and Florian Valot showing just how far they’ve come after a season with New York Red Bull II. The Revolution, however, had the better chances and were able to break through in the second half.

A brilliant ball from Diego Fagundez unleashed Rowe who chipped the ball past Rafa Diaz to opening the scoring in the 52nd minute. Rowe, split the Red Bulls defense and finally made them pay with a cool finish. The finishing shot came in the 89th minute when Nguyen slotted away a pass from Vaughn Watson. Nguyen was open in the box, once again exposing the inexperience in the Red Bull defense.

Now that the MLS preseason is over, the Red Bulls will be making decisions on trialists and draft picks. The first team will travel to Vancouver for Leg 2 of the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal series (tied 1-1 after last week’s game) while the USL team will prepare for its first game later on in the month of March.
