Lampard receives mixed reaction in Chelsea return

While the battle for the top of the Premiership table certainly was a focal point of Saturday’s 1-1 Chelsea, Manchester City draw, Frank Lampard’s return to Stamford Bridge provided an enticing sidebar to the occasion.

Facing Chelsea at Stamford Bridge for the first time since leaving the club late last season, Lampard entered the match as a 77th minute substitute for Fernando, receiving a mixed reception from Blues fans.

“It was a bit of a strange day for me,” Lampard told reporters after he match. “I was excited but a bit nervous because of coming back here. As a player here you don’t even think about it but I knew this would be different, but I enjoyed it in the end.”

Unlike his first encounter against Chelsea where he scored a match deciding equalizer at the Etihad, Lampard did not make much of an impact on this result. However, he did his best to honor the Blues faithful, staying well after his teammates to walk the perimeter of the field, greeting and applauding both Chelsea and City fans in attendance.

To that end, the reaction certainly changed from those in attendance, giving Lampard a more positive reaction than his match inclusion.

“I was delighted with the reception from both sets of fans,” he said. “Chelsea quite rightly get behind their side but they showed their class and I am very thankful for that.”

This will be the last time Chelsea and City face, barring a possible confrontation in UEFA Champions League.

Lampard is currently with Manchester City through the end of the Premiership season. He is expected to arrive in New York sometime in Jury
