Red Bull Roundup: Third DP, Robles, French Super Cup In RBA, Henry’s Zoo And More

New York Red Bulls’ Sporting Director and General Manager Erik Soler held a teleconference to discuss the current state of the team this Friday. From designated players, to visas and goalkeepers, Soler delineated the details of New York’s current and future plans.

Luke Rodgers’ return to MLS action is still very much up in the air. With a meeting taking place at the English Embassy sometime in early March, New York is looking for different avenues to keep their forward ready if he is to return stateside. My full story can be found on Soccer by Ives this week.

Soler touched upon the ever-popular topic of a third designated player, which he claimed would most likely happen this summer – “when we have a lot more options to choose from.” The club is looking for an option who would be in his twenties or early thirties, and who would be capable to “add more offensive power at some stage during the season.”

Asked whether he had the likes of Michael Ballack, Stephen Ireland or Alessandro Del Piero in his sights, Soler gave a trite dismissal. “I don’t like to comment about any names about any DP because as soon as I say one sentence, word or name it’s all over the world.”

While an extra offensive piece is pursued by the side, Soler expressed confidence in Icelandic midfielder Victor Palsson’s ability to push an attack forward; a sure sign that he expects the 21 year old to garner minutes.

Soler said he was pleased with his current goalkeeping corps of Ryan Meara and Jeremy Vuolo. Nevertheless, New York would be looking to petition the league to reverse their ruling on Luis Robles. If Robles becomes an impossibility, Soler has another solid target he would be pursuing, along with “4-5 other American” options he would entertain at the position.

And that is just the tip of the iceberg. With the season a shadow’s distance away from commencing, New York continues to get their ducks in a row. Check out the latest Red Bull fodder in this week’s Roundup:

TROPHEE DE CHAMPIONS MATCH TO BE HELD AT RED BULL ARENA

According to Le Parisien, Red Bull Arena will play host to this year’s Trophée des Champions; France’s Ligue 1 Super Cup pitting the Ligue Champion against the French Cup winner.

Over the past four years, the match has been taken on tour, featuring in Morocco, Tunisia and Montreal. This will mark the first time a non-French speaking nation will host the event.

The match will be taking place July 28th on the river banks of the Passaic and will be televised worldwide.

NEWS AND NOTES

– By this time, you may have already heard about Thierry Henry rebuilding his England mansion with a four story high fish tank, but did you also hear about the Bengal kitten he is purchasing as well? Check out the Sun for more.

Wilman Conde will not start in tonight’s Desert Cup Clash against New England. You can catch a live stream of the match on NewYorkRedBulls.com.

Tim Ream finally made his Premiership debut in a 3-0 loss to Chelsea. Though the scoreline is quite damning, Ream did manage to hold up well against the attack, though he was slightly victimized on the third goal.

Making a player with one cap go through the allocation process is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. All your doing is turning good American talent away from the league.

Who the heck are these 4-5 Americans Soler is talking about? Could one be Josh Wicks? Former MLS keeper with experience? I know all about the Freddie Montero incident but he’s got some talent.
