With World Cup Qualifiers just weeks away, New York Red Bulls head coach Mike Petke fully expects to suffer losses to his starting roster.

Both Tim Cahill and Roy Miller have been staples for their countries in early qualifying action. Considering their run of form on the club level, they are surely to be called in for action.

Australia are currently running middle of the pack with a 1-1-3 record, good for six points in the Asian Group B standings. They visit first-place Japan (4-1-1, 13 pts.) on June 4 and host second-place Jordan (2-3-1, seven pots.) on June 11. They round out this vital run against cellar dwelling Iraq (1-2-2, five pts.) on June 18.

In their current third place position, Australia would be forced into an all-too-familiar home and home playoff against the fifth place South American team. Considering their precarious position and the team’s workload, Cahill may miss games through June – including a fixture against Philadelphia on the 23rd.

“As far as I know, he’ll possibly be here through Columbus with a question mark on the Vancouver game,” Petke said. “I anticipate, if I would have to guess, he will be not be available for the Vancouver game.

“I know he’s got some pretty big qualifiers coming up and I guess Australia’s fate for the World Cup will be determined from early to mid-June. So that’s going to be a huge game for them. That’s what we are looking at right now.”

The matches are so important, the Australian Federation has already reached out to Petke for his services. While Costa Rica has not done the same for Miller, Petke anticipates a similar request. Costa Rica is in second place in the CONCACAF Hexagonal (1-1-1, 4pts.) with three important qualifiers coming up. They host fourth-place Honduras on June 7, travel to fifth-place Mexico on June 10th (0-0-3) and end their run against current first place side Panama (1-0-2, five points) at home on June 18.

“I have not gotten any word yet about Roy,” he said. “Usually, the Federation will call up, not this early, but more like a week or so out. We have not gotten word on Roy yet and judging by the amount Roy has been involved with the Costa Rican team, I think it will be a good chance that he will be requested to be there.”
