The New York Red Bulls may be battered at the centerback position, but they aren’t rushing towards a quick fix solution.

That is the message from Jesse Marsch regarding trialist Amobi Okugo who continues to be under evaluation with the club.

“It was good again today,” Marsch said of Okugo after Tuesday’s training session. “We are continuing to get a full picture of what Amobi is about. It’s been good, it’s been good.”

Okugo joins Red Bulls camp at a crucial time. The club has been cursed by untimely injuries across the backline, from Ronald Zubar, Gideon Baah and Damien Perrinelle to recent injury casualty Kemar Lawrence. While Marsch labeled the progress of each player as “day-to-day,” they won’t be available in time to take the field for this week’s encounter against Sporting KC.

It is there that Okugo becomes an appealing option. After all, the California native was a solid starter for several years with the Philadelphia Union before moving on to Orlando City and Sporting KC.

While the resume and need are there, Marsch is giving Okugo a more thorough look before making a decision.

“In the end, it will be where are we with the roster and where he fits in,” Marsch said. “We aren’t ready to make a decision, but overall, positive.”
