Easy come, easy go.

The New York Red Bulls announced on Saturday that they have released defender Zach Carroll. Carroll came to New York via the second round pick in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft this past January.

While Carroll impressed in the early goings of training camp, his stock on the team dropped significantly over time. The acquisition of veteran defender Aurelien Collin meant yet another roster spot taken up, and no more room at the proverbial inn.

Carroll spent two years at the University of Virginia before transferring to Michigan State. He started 38 of his 39 appearances for the Spartans and earned First Team All-Big Ten honors as well as being named to the NCSAA second team Midwest Region as a senior. Along with his college career, he represented the US at the U-17 FIFA World Cup.

While he was part of New York’s senior team, Carroll never could quite crack the 18 man roster and made no appearances in MLS play.
