New York Red Bulls drafted Iona College defender Jordan Scarlett with the 17th pick in the third round of the 2017 MLS SuperDraft. Scarlett will join Zeiko Lewis and Ethan Kutler who were drafted in the earlier rounds.

Scarlett played three seasons for the Iona College Gaels, starting in at least 18 games each season. He also finished his junior year as a member of the All-MAAC Academic Team and the All-MAAC Second Team with five assists over 19 games.

Scarlett is coming into the team during a time when the roster is thinner than normal in defense. Whether or not he spends some time with the USL’s New York Red Bull II remains to be seen, but there are opportunities to move up quickly should his skills prove proficient.

With the selection of Scarlett, New York is done in the draft, having traded the fourth round pick to Toronto back in 2014. That trade saw Richard Eckersley join the Red Bulls in January of that year. He spent one season with the team, making only nine appearances.
