New York Red Bull II returned to their winning ways with a 3-1 win over the Pittsburgh Riverhounds — but that was only part of the story.

The match was overshadowed by an injury to Karl Ouimette after a kick in the back by Romeo Parkes in the 88th minute.

The situation began in the 87th minute when Tyler Adams took down a Riverhounds player with a rough foul. The hard play induced a scuffle between players that forced the referee to give both Romeo Parkes and Ouimette red cards, ejecting them from the game and handing them suspensions.

But it wasn’t over there. The situation escalated when they were separated. Ouimette was kicked in the back by Parkes which escalated the situation. The game was stopped and Ouimette was stretchered out.

The situation ruined what was a hard fought and competitive match. The first half saw Pittsburgh push ahead early with strong pressure. Former Red Bull Corey Herzog had a few opportunities early on but couldn’t put anything significant on net. It was in the 10th minute that the game changed when Romeo Parkes stripped Tyler Adams of the ball and scored the game’s opening goal.

New York responded two minutes later when Justin Bilyeu crossed the ball into the box, finding the head of Anatole Abang. Despite being well covered, Abang managed to direct the ball into the right post, tying the game.

From there, New York controlled the game for the remainder of the half, pushing for a lead but unable to convert.

The second half saw New York soak up a bit of pressure before finding the back of the net again. Substitute Stefano Bonomo, who returned to his role as a striker, found a pass in the box from Justin Bilyeu to give Red Bull II the lead. From New York continued to push forward and Derrick Etienne Jr. scored for his second of the season off of a cross from Junior Flemmings.

The game returns New York to the win column and extends Pittsburgh’s losing streak as they have yet to win a game in 2016 and lost all three home games as well.

New York returns home next week to play the Richmond Kickers.
