The New York Red Bulls have named Sacha Kljestan the team captain for the 2017 season, taking over for Dax McCarty who was traded to Chicago during the off-season.
“He’s a great leader,” Coach Jesse Marsch said. “He’s such a big piece of what we do. I really expect his leadership to grow immensely this year now that he’s captain.”
Kljestan joined New York in 2015 from the Belgium side Anderlecht. Since his return to MLS, the midfielder has notched 34 assists and 14 goals in 65 games. This past season, Kljestan had a record-setting 20 assists and was nominated for league MVP.
“It’s definitely an honor to be named captain of this club,” Kljestan said. “I am excited about the chance to lead this group. I think the most important thing is that I’m going to represent my teammates, the coaching staff, the entire club and the supporters in the best way possible.”
Kljestan also returned to the national team under the former coach, Jurgen Klinsmann, and now Bruce Arena. In total the California-native has made 52 appearances for the U.S. men and scored six goals.
