HARRISON, N.J. – It’s over. Again.

The New York Red Bulls exit the MLS Cup Playoffs after a disappointing 2-1 defeat at Red Bull Arena to the Montreal Impact on Sunday night. Ignacio Piatti’s two goals sealed the two leg series as the Impact won 3-1 on aggregate.

“Once it gets to be 1-0 at home and the aggregate is two, you’re chasing the game with the road goal, then the whole thing goes haywire,” said Marsch about the game. “We just weren’t good enough in the series to capitalize on our advantages.

New York came out hot to start the first half, dominating possession and looking poised to score early. Gonzalo Veron started the game in place of Mike Grella and gave the Red Bulls a bit more creativity in the final third. His work managed to produce a penalty opportunity in the 20th minute. Unfortunately for New York, Evan Bush was up to the task, beating MLS MVP candidate’s Sacha Kljestan’s attempt.

The second half is where situations became bleak for the Red Bulls. Just six minutes in, the ball fell to the feet of Ignacio Piatti who broke loose of both Aurelien Collin and Chris Duvall before scoring his first of the game. He then scored again in the 85th minute as the Red Bulls were caught on the counter.

New York attempted a comeback with a 77th minute goal by Bradley Wright-Phillips, but their missed opportunities earlier in the game eventually was their undoing.

“I give Montreal a lot of credit. They defended really well,” said captain Dax McCarty. “They made plays and we didn’t.

“Soccer is a simple game. You don’t make plays, you’re not going to win.”

New York exit the playoffs after two straight losses. Before those results, they finishing the regular season with a 20 game unbeaten streak. Clearly, that momentum wasn’t enough to carry them through in the postseason.

The Impact move on in the MLS Cup Playoffs and will play the winner of NYCFC and Toronto FC. Toronto currently has a 2-0 aggregate lead heading into the second leg at Yankee Stadium.
