The New York Red Bulls have added another forward in the Norwegian international Fredrik Gulbrandsen, 24, on loan from Austria’s Red Bull Salzburg.

“We are excited to welcome Fredrik to New York for the season,” sporting director Denis Hamlett said in a statement. “He is a player we are familiar with and we think his attributes will be a good fit in our system. His familiarity with the Red Bull style of soccer means that we expect him to assimilate quickly into our group.”

Gulbrandsen made only nine appearances for Salzburg in 2016 and was fighting for playing time this season with Salzburg in first place in Austria’s Bundesliga. He had early success with the Norwegian side Molde, where he scored 19 goals in 42 appearances. He was a product of the Lillestrom academy, where he played from 2008-13.

Gulbrandsen isn’t the first striker to come to New York from Red Bull’s European teams. Last season Omer Damari was here on loan for the second half of the season from RB Leipzig. Injuries and poor decisions in the playoffs kept him off the field and he returned to Europe at the end of the 2016 season.
