When Red Bulls coach Mike Petke said his staff would make decisions on the roster shortly after the Malmo FF match, he wasn’t kidding.

The New York Red Bulls announced the signing of former Charlton Athletic midfielder Ruben Izquierdo pending receipt of his P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate.

“Ruben is a very interesting young player with a lot of potential,” Red Bulls Sporting Director Andy Roxburgh said. “He is technically very good and his willingness to work and learn bodes well for his future development.”

Izquierdo, 20, was on loan with Charlton from Spanish Segunda side CD San Roque de Lepe last season. The 5’7″ 144 lb winger excelled against Malmo in yesterday’s 3-2 preseason victory capping off what has been a successful camp for the diminutive midfielder. He set up the game tying goal en route to the team’s late come from behind victory and was also in the middle of a bubbling scrap with a few Malmo players.

He now joins a thin Red Bulls midfield which currently boasts Tim Cahill, Dax McCarty, Lloyd Sam, and Juninho.
