Red Bulls still pushing for potential MLS Cup home field advantage

The New York Red Bulls may be all but a lock for the Eastern Conference top seed, but head coach Jesse Marsch still feels the team has something to play for: namely, home field advantage in the MLS Cup Final.

“There’s still something to play for in the table in terms of hosting MLS Cup,” said Marsch in training. “If Colorado slips up and we win … anyone but Dallas and we play at home. That’s a factor and we want to keep pushing.”

New York has 54 points and could match the Rapids at that same number should they drop their last game to the Houston Dynamo. Last week, Colorado suffered their first loss in seven games, a 1-0 loss the Portland Timbers. New York will have an away game against the Philadelphia Union who are looking to better their knockout playoff standing heading into next week.

As Marsch said, Dallas is already out of the Red Bulls’ reach at 59 pts. However, in a field that allows six teams into the playoffs per conference, New York would only be strengthening their position with a win at Phildelphia.

“We want to keep our foot on the gas so that down the stretch we’re still ready to be sharp,” said Marsch. “You’re not going to see us take our foot off the pedal. We might make a couple of changes here or there but we’re going to put a good team on the field.”
