Red Bulls Tim Cahill considers off-season loan to prepare for World Cup

New York Red Bulls star midfielder Tim Cahill will be the first to tell you that the life of a footballer is fleeting. He usually brings up that fact when discussing his personal sacrifice in flying unimaginable hours from Australia to the various club team’s he has featured for over the years, pushing his body to make every game imaginable.

Come December, the Socceroo star doesn’t plan on sitting still during the MLS offseason. He has no time to stay idle. Cahill made it clear to reporters in his homeland; he wants an offseason loan to keep him fresh for the coming World Cup.

“Footballers need to play. That’s what I did before I came into the Socceroos World Cup qualifying campaign and I think when you’re playing and keeping fit, you’re keeping that momentum there,” he told reporters. “It’s the best thing for any player.”

Cahill explored a similar option during last years summer transfer window, flirting with his former side Everton. This year, Cahill has no particular target. He simply wants to keep playing.

“My first option would be to go on loan to the Premier League or somewhere in Europe,” Cahill said. “If not, then I’ll stay at the Red Bulls and have a tough training regime going into the World Cup.

“It all depends on the scenario – how my body is, where I’m at and whether I need it,” he continued. “Maybe my body might not need it and maybe it will, so we’ll assess in due course.”

For now, Cahill is expected to return to New York Tuesday after an extended stay in Australia.

“Tim came off in that final World Cup qualifier somewhere around the 80th minute. He felt a little something in his groin – nothing to be concerned about,” Red Bulls head coach Mike Petke noted. “Even if he had come back he might not have been available for Philly.

“His mom had a pretty serious medical condition that popped up. She had to have emergency surgery. Of course we allowed him to stay there. She is fine now recovering. He jumped on a plane 12 hours ago.

“He should be in and be ready to roll (Wednesday) for practice and this weekend.”
