imagesHARRISON, N.J. — Alex Muyl scored a goal for the second straight game and the New York Red Bulls won their second consecutive match in a three-game home stand in Saturday night’s 2-0 shutout of the Columbus Crew at Red Bull Arena.

The Red Bulls (4-3-1, 13 points) jumped on top in the 11th minute. Sacha Kljestan led the overlapping defender Kemar Lawrence along the left flank. Lawrence slid a cross that deflected off a Crew (4-3-1, 13) defender, hit Muyl in the chest and dropped to his feet. Muyl, 21, pounced on the ball and put it past Zack Steffen for his second goal of the season.

The Red Bulls doubled their lead seven minutes before the interval. Bradley Wright-Phillips was upended in the penalty area by Crew defender Alex Crognale and Referee Jorge Gonzalez pointed immediately to the penalty spot. Daniel Royer stepped up and blasted the PK past Steffen to the near, upper-right corner of the goal.

The victory vaulted New York into a first-place tie with Columbus in Major League Soccer’s Eastern Conference, pending the outcome of Sunday’s game between NYCFC and Orlando City. The Red Bulls extended their home unbeaten streak to four games this year and 18 games over all. The two wins came after the club’s four-game winless streak.

The Red Bulls complete their three-game homestand next Saturday against their former captain Dax McCarty, the German international Bastian Schweinsteiger and the Chicago Fire.
