NEW YORK, N.Y. – The New York Cosmos announced the acquisition of Portland Timbers 2 forward Kharlton Belmar on a short-term loan deal.

Per club policy, terms of said deal were not disclosed.

The 22-year-old Virginia Beach native was T2’s leading goal scorer this season, earning 12 goals and three assists in 28 matches. He was seventh in United Soccer League scoring and tied for seventh in points (27) — and did not miss a single match with the club this season. He was the 34th overall pick in the 2015 MLS Draft (second round). He was originally cut by the first team but landed with the USL side instead.

Belmar joins a Cosmos striking corps that has hit a bit of a late-season lull. Lucky Mkosana is the regular lone striker for New York. The legendary Raul, meanwhile, has taken more of a backseat into the midfield than as a true, sit-at-home striker. Meanwhile, wingers Leo Fernandes and Walter Restrepo have slowed their contributions considerably over the past several weeks and Gaston Cellerino remains a question mark.

Belmar is not currently with the Cosmos in training. He will be arriving this week and training with the club next week.

Maybe a good pickup, but our defense has been getting shredded lately. Isn’t that what we need?

This move is a reaction to beating the Fury in the future with speed at the striker position. I think the defense while the last couple of games has been the worst of the season is solved by putting in Roversio for Caceres.

Caceres has been good for the season just the last couple he has gotten shredded – don’t mean to single him out its a team game soooo

I’m big fan of Roversio, he changes the whole dynamic on defense, but he’s NEVER healthy

Me 2 Kevin I love Roversio to me along with some of my friends who are Cosmos fans think he is one of the most important players in order for them to win it all. I just think he gives them stability on the backline, very disciplined, rarely makes a mistake and great decision making with the ball. It also allows Ayoze and Freeman to overlap and feed balls into Raul, Lucky and Leo. With his great decision making and overall play it allows the Cosmos to play their ball possession game and control the tempo. I am positive that we would have played the Fury to a tie and won the game in Edmonton or at least tie there this past week with him in the lineup. Hopefully this w/e we will see him I pray !!!!

I totally agree with u. Hope as well to see him on the field Saturday
