With the regular season over, the Houston Dynamo have parted ways with interim head coach Wade Barrett and are set to hire Wilmer Cabrera to lead the club going forward.

Reports from both Paul Tenorio and the Houston Chronicle claim the Dynamo have signed Cabrera to lead the team next season. An announcement is scheduled for this Friday.

Cabrera hails from Colombia and was a member of its national team in the 1990s, including trips to two World Cups. Since retiring as a player, Cabrera has held a series of short-lived managerial positions, including U.S. youth national teams, the final season of Chivas USA, and, most recently, the Dynamo’s USL affiliate RGV Toros.

The removal of Barrett was met with significant criticism from players on Twitter.

After taking over for Owen Coyle in midseason, Barrett shored up the Dynamo’s defense. But their scoring woes continued, and they finished with the worst record in the Western Conference. Barrett had been a former player and longtime assistant with the club.
