Former Red Bull striker Juan Agudelo spent part of this offseason training with Celtic FC of the SPL. In that time, reports surfaced stating there was interest in both sides for a transfer, but Chivas USA, the young American’s current side, stepped in and squashed the rumors.
Today, a report from Sky News claims Celtic is “closing in” on signing him.
What did Agudelo do with that report? He retweeted it, adding substance to the claim.
What a world we live in.
The 20 year old forward is perhaps one of the most promising products in the US Soccer system. However, he underwent a turbulent 2012. After unexpectedly getting traded from his childhood home, Agudelo resettled in Los Angeles for Chivas USA where he put up three goals and two assists over 20 appearances. However, he did earn prolonged exposure on the pitch, starting in 16 matches with the club.
For his part, Celtic coach Neil Lennon was impressed by what he saw of the young American back in November.
“He has looked very good, we have been very impressed with him,” Lennon said. “We are hoping he will stay around for a few more days and we can talk with his representatives.”
It is worth noting; one condition of his initial trade to Chivas USA tied the Red Bulls to any monetary gain of the player’s transfer, at an undisclosed percentage. The Red Bulls acquired Heath Pearce and allocation money in the deal as well.

Agudelo to #Hoops would be a great move for him and the #USMNT Euro tournaments pretty much every year. http://t.co/nbucSqjv #RBNY #Chivas
Win win for everyone. NYRB gets cash and still has Heath Pearce on the team.
