Soccer by Ives cites sources that say former Videoton FC head man Paulo Sousa will take over the helm at New York this week. Sousa, first connected to the post by ESPN reporter Alexi Lalas. He will lead a coaching staff that will also include Red Bulls first ever Designated Player, Claudio Reyna as the team’s top assistant. Mike Petke will be retained by the staff, and the addition of another assistant and a goalkeeping coach is expected.
Sousa is coming off his most successful run as a coach to date with Hungarian side Videoton FC. There, he was able to secure a League Cup and a pair of Super Cup victories as well. His prior coaching stints through the English system have garnered far less acclaim with short and uneventful stays at Swansea, QPR and Leicester. Reyna will also be leaving his post as US youth technical director.
EoS independently confirmed sources last week connecting Sousa to the job. For those wanting a closer look at the man who will be taking over, here is a compilation of his work assembled last week.
