Report: Red Bulls to sign Austrian int’l Daniel Royer

Daniel Royer

by DAVE MARTINEZ

Is Daniel Royer the New York Red Bulls’ long sought after transfer target?

According to AOK.DK, FC Midtjylland is set to transfer Royer, 26, to the Red Bulls for 1.5 million krone – or roughly $224k.

So who is Daniel Royer? The 5’9″ Austrian international features on the left wing for Midtjylland, but can also play on the right. He has featured for Hannover 96 and FC Koln in Germany’s Bundesliga and has also competed in the Austrian Bundesliga with Austria Wien, where he earned Champions League experience. He has earned six senior national team caps to date.

According to AOK, he is currently in the United States undergoing a medical. The deal may be announced as early as this week.

“It is true that we are working to find a new club to Daniel, and right now there are various options in the game,” Claus Steinlein, sporting director of FC Midtjylland, told AOK. “But I can not tell which clubs it is all about.”

Currently, the Red Bulls deploy Mike Grella on the left midfield slot and Alex Muyl on the right. Against NYCFC, Grella was moved to the right wing, leaving options for Royer upon his arrival. New York also continue to boast little-used Designated Player Gonzalo Veron as an option on the wings, but he has played just 421 minutes through 13 appearances this year.

For those unfamiliar with Royer, here is a highlight reel package of his play:

  • Video 2 … we signing him for the street team? I jest ! ;)

  • slowleftarm

I guess this is the Lloyd Sam replacement?

    • EPL GUY

Yea I guess it wont really matter will it

  • Captain hook

    Chivas USA 2.0
Remember it took 10 years for Chivas USA to die. Red bull have 4 years left

    • CosmosLoser

I agree. I, like you, never had a real job and don’t understand economics, but I throw that crap out all the time because we’re smart and cool. Also, we hardly date girls. NYCFC will fold in September and the Cosmos are done in November. Can you believe we can’t even do 5 push ups? But we sure know finances.

      • Captain hook

This is not about microeconomics or macroeconomics, this is about reality.
Nycfc is resurrecting red bull but that’s not enough.
My point is, red bull Is cheap and a marketing machine.

        • slowleftarm

The “cheap” team last year did better than some of the teams with “big names” like Henry, Cahill and Marquez. I agree they could spend a bit more but just bringing in a bunch of names hasn’t always worked well for MLS teams.

Anyway, this the team’s 11th season under Red Bull so your math is off.

          • EPL Guy

YAWN !!!!!! your momma has nice pillows !

        • CosmosLoser

Hey Captain, listen we need to stick together. We are not bright, we say stuff like the team will fold in 7 years and stuff like that. People call us losers because we dress funny, possibly because we are girly cry babies about Metro or Petke and this is our revenge. We spent high school getting bullied and we can’t even afford an NYCFC ticket. But you and I are a team and we need to keep saying teams will fold. God knows the girls that run away from us will never fold to us. So this is where we make our stand. I have to go, my mom wants me to get off the Wifi.

  • Sammy the Red Bull

It almost makes sense we get a guy from FC Midtjylland which is owned by Mathew Benham, who also owns Brentford FC. Benham basis alot on statistical analysis which seems to be the direction Ali Curtis is going. We seem to always be looking for the value for dollar guy, a guy most people don’t know or pay much attention to.

If this guy can help then I am all for it but I would like to see them go out and sign another DP caliber player also. So far Ali is 0 for 1 with DP signings.

  • MTF

Where’s the dude who always posts about how the cheap Red Bull organization should sell to the Cosmos because despite being in the largest market, they won’t open their wallet for Zlatan, or Carlos Vela or Lionel Messi? Don’t let me down.

    • The Rock

The new question is: What will happen first? Red Bull selling or NYCFC getting their stadium? Only then will Zlatan, Messi, and Neymar go to that team

    • EPL GUY

What will u say when the team is relocated ? and rebranded

      • slowleftarm

What team – the Cosmos? I’ll laugh.

        • EPL Guy

still no one really cares about the RB they are as nonexistent as ever in the NY sports scene YAWN !!!!!!!!!!!!! Plus whats with the constant adjusting of the attendance numbers whats the matter afraid of the REAL TRUTH ?

          • slowleftarm

Looks like angry bill has dusted off this fake name again. So tedious. Yes, no one cares about the team that’s won the Supporters Shield twice in the last three years and draws 20k a game but everyone cares lots about the minor league Cosmos playing in a lacrosse stadium in front of 3-4k. Makes sense.

            • MTF

The Cosmos are independent, organic and authentic. They are world reknown and played in Cuba. Plus you can get Pele, Beckenbauer, and Chinaglia bobble heads. That’s relevance my friend.

    • Captain hook

Does anyone know which NY franchise/club,team if sold, costs the more.

      • slowleftarm

RBNY obviously because the sale would include RBA.

  • i hope this does not turn into another Veron

    • MTF

I think this spells the end for Veron. I expect this guy to push Muyl and Veron a little further down the depth chart, and for Veron to be let go after this season. The Gonzalo experiment hasn’t worked and shows no signs of taking off. I think San Lorenzo knew what they were doing.

      • slowleftarm

Agree with this – Veron is on his way out. His interview a week or two ago on this site made it pretty clear there are issues between him and Marsch. You could argue he hasn’t got enough chances but he hasn’t shown much when he has played.

  • EPL Guy

This team just gets more lost as the year go by – really hard to take after awhile

  • Captain hook

This is a very intriguing question, if anyone knows.
Which ny soccer franchise/team is the most expensive if sold.
-nycfc represents the city but no stadium
-Red bull have everything built but no identity
-Cosmos has history but no future

    • CosmosLoser

Let’s have a math party. The sale is imminent. Do you even read a paper or have a bank account or kissed girl? Seriously you might be the dumbest virgin on this site, and that is hard to do.
