According to Sky Sports, the Black Cats of Sunderland are looking to reinforce their side with the Australian international.

Cahill, 33, scored a single goal while assisting on three others through 12 appearances with New York. He spent most of his half season working on his form and finding his niche in a crowded midfield. By years end, he became a valuable leader in the locker room for the team.

The Australian international earned a strong reputation as a team leader and a deadly aerial threat during his time with Everton. Sunderland boss Martin O’Neil is looking for both qualities as his side faces a half season which will likely call on his side to stave off relegation.

For their part, the Red Bulls brain trust has stood quite firm on their desire to keep the team’s Designated Players home through the winter months. Rafa Marquez was the loan exception to that rule, having his contract rescinded and allowing the former Mexican Captain to join Leon of Liga MX.
