Those hoping for a summer friendly between the New York Red Bulls and La Liga’s Valencia may have to wait a while.

EoS has learned that both sides have been in discussions over a midseason encounter at Red Bull Arena. However, that match is, as one source tells us, “not looking likely for this year.”

Initial reports out of Spain linked the perennial La Liga power to a friendly in Harrison.  According to AS, that match would be played as early as this May.

The timing, however, is suspect. New York’s full May schedule, which includes weekly matches from May 2nd, 10th, 15th, 24th and the 31st, does not allow the room or time for such an encounter.

The talks, however, are real.  Sources with knowledge of the potential friendly tell EoS both sides have been in discussions for some time. As AS reports, Valencia is looking for a U.S. opponent for both economic and political reasons.  The organization is in the midst of an ongoing effort to strengthen their relationships with the Red Bull global football apparatus. The team is already scheduled for a preseason stint at the Red Bull Salzburg complex this summer. The New York Red Bull friendly would be a in line with their efforts to work alongside the Red Bull global group.

Logistically, it seems an impossibility for this year. However, New York have left the door open for a possible encounter for next season.
