The New York Cosmos and Brazil’s Santos have one vibrant connection; their history and ties with world football legend, Pele.

Now, both sides may unite to honor the Brazilian great.

According to AS, Nabil Khaznadar, a businessman and candidate for the Presidency of Santos, traveled out to New York this past week to discuss the possibility of a friendly between the Cosmos and the Clube do Povo.

The point of the encounter?  Retiring Pele’s iconic number 10 with the historic Brazilian side.

“We want to play a friendly between Santos and the Cosmos as an homage to Pele and at the same time, to retire his number 10 so that it stays in our memory,” Khaznadar tells AS. “The number 10 shirt of Santos would only be his.

“Pele is always in our hearts and minds.”

That is a sentiment that will surely ring true with the Cosmos as well.  Aside from his obvious historical connections to the club, Pele continues to be a key figure in the team’s resurrection, taking part in opening day festivities and several commercial events last year.  He also continues to serve as the club’s honorary President.

The Cosmos are also forging a path much in the same vein of their former incarnation.  Not only have they restarted their professional play in the NASL, but they have also returned to their roots within the grounds of Hofstra University as well.  Moreover, star power is also returning to the club.  Last year’s signing of Marcos Senna has now given way to the addition of Real Madrid legend Raul.

Santos finished the 2013 Brazilian Campeonato at mid-table (7th). Former President Luis Álvaro de Oliveira Ribeiro left the club with health concerns early this season, replaced by Vice President Odilo Rodrigues. The final presidential vote takes place this December.
