HARRISON, N.J. – As it turns out, the New York Red Bulls really did need Connor Lade.

Back from his loan with the NASL’s New York Cosmos, Lade managed to make an impact, finding the late equalizer to earn a 1-1 draw in the Red Bulls’ final CONCACAF Champions League match of the tournament.

Down 1-0 late in the match, Lade broke Montreal’s line, poking a feed in the box past Impact keeper Evan Bush in the 83rd minute for the tying goal. Jack McInerney gave the Impact a short lived lead, finding net thanks to a brilliant Andres Romero feed in the 71st minute.

With Montreal advancing past the group last month, both teams saw changes to their usual starting XI.  While the Impact featured more of their key starters, the Red Bulls trotted out a reserve laden lineup for this inconsequential encounter. Ryan Meara earned the rare start, flanked by Chris Duvall, Matt Miazga, Damien Perrinelle and Kosuke Kimura. Ian Christianson and Eric Stevenson manned the midfield with Connor Lade, Ruben Bover and Marius Obekop on the wings. Saer Sene received the nod at the center of attack.

The lanky Frenchman was a frequent target for the Red Bull midfield. Twice, the former Revolution striker found space in the box, and twice, goalkeeper Bush managed to beat him to the feed.

Aside from a tame Ruben Bover curler from the right side of the box and a failed McInerney chip on Ryan Meara, the first half saw both sides put in rather listless performances. The second half found a similar rhythm until a late set-piece in the Impact’s area found Armando in space. The maligned Spanish defender headed a Bover feed to the path of Lade, who redirected the shot past Bush for the tying goal.

With CCL action officially out of the way, New York return their focus on the season, jockeying for playoff position in a vital away encounter against Sporting KC this wee end.
