New York City FC believes Alexander Ring is the final piece in its midfield puzzle. Whether Ring stays at the club beyond 2017 is an open question.

Ring, 25, joined NYCFC on a one-year deal after mutually agreeing to terminate his contract with Kaiserslautern of the 2.Bundesliga. He plays for Finland’s national team and will likely be asked to travel to games in Europe during international break. He said the travel will factor into whether he stays at the club beyond this season.

“I will see how it goes this season,” Ring said. “If it’s too much then I have to sit down and talk with my family and the national team coach but I mean I’m 25. I should live through the couple of flights I have to do this year. We will see how it goes and if it’s too much then we have to make a decision.”

Ring said he had wanted to leave Kaiserslautern on “numerous occasions” but the club refused until City came calling over the winter. Despite the team’s interest, Ring was only able to join NYCFC late last month because of visa issues. He was able to start in midfield alongside Andrea Pirlo and Maxi Moralez in the team’s first regular-season game last Sunday.

“I think we work well together,” Ring said. “Everybody has their specific part. That was the first game me, Maxi and Andrea played together. I think we dominated the midfield and I’m looking forward to the future.”
