The United States has advanced to the Gold Cup semifinal after dismantling Cuba 6-0 on Saturday afternoon in Baltimore.

The offensive explosion was lead by Clint Dempsey whose hat trick is the first of his international career. The effort puts him just 10 goals behind Landon Donovan’s American goal scoring record. Aron Johannsson, Omar Gonzalez, and Gyasi Zardes added goals of their own to ensure the result.

It took a little more than three minutes for the United States to find the back of the net. The U.S. struck first when Dempsey got his head on the end of a Timmy Chandler cross to make it 1-0.

A little more than ten minutes later, the U.S. would score again. A cross from Fabian Johnson chipped the Cuban defense to find the feet of Gyasi Zardes. The Galaxy striker barely had to put anything on the volley to give the Americans a two-goal lead.

In the month of July, the United States has made a habit of beating goalkeepers from distance. Just before the 33rd minute, Michael Bradley continued that trend, heaving a bomb up to Aron Johannsson from behind midfield that drew the Cuban goalkeeper off his line. The AZ Alkmaar man finished the opportunity with a beautiful chip from the top of the box to make it 3-0.

Jurgen Klinsmann’s side was not done scoring in the first half. As the fourth official signaled for two minutes of stoppage time, the United States earned a corner. Bradley delivered a ball to the far post that forced Johannsson to keep it in bounds. The header was directed toward Omar Gonzalez who scored his first international goal while falling to the ground.

At halftime the United States held a convincing 4-0 lead.

All afternoon Cuba just had no answer for the United States, and frustration became increasingly evident. Just after the hour mark, Johannsson was brought down in the box to earn a penalty while awaiting a cross. Dempsey would step to the spot, and put this one right down the center for his second of the game.

In the 73rd minute, Deuce earned his hat trick. With another ball over the top that the Cuban defense failed to clear, Bradley picked up the ball and advanced it into the box before finding the Texan. Dempsey finished the opportunity to make it 6-0.

With that goal, Dempsey becomes the first American to score a hat trick since Jozy Altidore did in August of 2013.

The United States will await the winner of the Haiti/Jamaica on Wednesday in Atlanta. The semifinal can be seen on Fox Sports 1 and UniMas.
