For the first time since 2013, attacking midfielder Freddy Adu will be sticking with a club for a follow up season.

The Tampa Bay Rowdies announced on Tuesday morning that Adu has signed a new contract through 2017, with a club option for 2018. The Rowdies elected to forgo simply picking up its option on Adu and instead chose to solidify its future with the attacker with a new contract entirely.

The only major concern about Adu’s return to the Rowdies was the firing of Head Coach Thomas Rongen only a month after Adu’s initial signing in July. Rongen’s replacement Stuart Campbell, though, showed no qualms about playing Adu once he had fully recovered from his nagging Achilles injury. Adu started the final six matches under Campbell and finished the season with a promising three assists from only eight appearances.

“We liked what we saw from Freddy Adu last season and we’re excited to see what he can do with a full preseason of preparation,” said Campbell. “He hasn’t had a regular preseason experience in a while now and I think it’ll be hugely beneficial to him to have the chance to build up to the regular season instead of getting thrown into the mix midway like last year.”

Some form of continuity will likely be a welcome holiday gift for the former teenage phenom who has not had any semblance of consistency since he left the Philadelphia Union in 2013. Adu had brief stints at four different clubs across the globe in the short time since he departed the United States.

Adu will almost certainly play a pivotal role in the rebuilding of the Rowdies attack that struggled to bury goals on a regular basis throughout the 2015 season. Tampa Bay finished with an underwhelming 18 goals in the Fall Season. To further the rebuilding effort, the Rowdies also secured the services of fomer Ottawa Fury FC forward Tom Heinemann, who tallied eight goals in the regular season and four more in the postseason.
