Rumor Killer: NYCFC not pursuing Iker Casillas

No Casillas NYCFC

by CHRISTIAN ARAOS

Despite several recent reports to the contrary, New York City FC will not be pursuing Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas’ signature.

EoS has learned the 34-year-old Spanish National Team legend has not been in the club’s plans at all for the 2016 season.

Last week, EcoDiario reported NYCFC would be looking to sign Casillas for the summer — a report also backed by ESPN FC just this week. The goalkeeper has struggled with FC Porto this season, playing 20 matches for the third place Porto side but showing inconsistency in his performances. In order to sign Casillas, NYCFC would have had to remove an international player from its roster or acquire an international spot before signing him.

Casillas was connected to a move stateside last season; a negotiation unearthed by court documents in Spain. However, one source tells EoS that those discussions never happened and that Casillas was never an NYCFC target.

NYCFC continues its preseason with goalkeepers Josh Saunders and Eirik Johansen on its roster. Wilmington Hammerheads goalkeeper Andre Rawls also training with the team.
