Former Toronto FC striker Jermaine Defoe will turn down a chance to return to Major League Soccer as he announced his new contract extension with Sunderland, keeping him with the Black Cats until 2019.

Earlier in the week, it was suggested that former Tottenham star Jermain Defoe could be on his way to New York to join the Red Bulls. The rumor began when someone at Univision’s Futbol MLS blog cited unnamed sources, suggesting the Red Bulls had their eye on Jermaine Defoe and Robbie Keane.

The rumor had no weight to it until Univision Deportes reporter David Ruiz quoted anonymous sources, who advised that Defoe was not opposed to rejoining the MLS. In addition, Ruiz’s anonymous sources also suggested that he liked the idea of living in the New York.

Defoe previously played with Toronto FC in the 2014/15 MLS season, where he made 19 appearances and scored 11 goals. However, following the firing of manager Nelsen, Defoe was announced as unsettled in Toronto. Upon the announcement, GM Tim Bezbatchenko announced that the club would entertain offers for the English striker.

“We’re speaking with him and then we’ll make a decision. We’ll discuss it over the next 24 hours.”

Defoe went on to join Sunderland in that January, becoming a pivotal part of a struggling Premier League side. The 33-year-old has gone on to make 49 appearances for the Black Cats, scoring 19 goals.

With head coach Sam Allardyce hoping to reinforce his squad to avoid a relegation battle next season, it made a lot of sense for Sunderland to resign the enigmatic striker.

Even though Defoe could have helped New York score a few more goals, the rumor never had enough weight to it.

Univision deported has MLS rumors connections? All they know is ligamx and Mexico national team.
Red bull should go after zlatan!!!!!! It would be perfect for red bull soda ny.
Zlatan would be the face of red bull everywhere in the world. If I was red bull I would trade for jozy, and drop Veron and go for Tim ream as well.

    • slowleftarm

Why do RBNY need Jozy? If they’re going to pay someone $6m+, they can get someone better. Zlatan is on his way to Man U.

Univision deported? Was Trump elected already??

  • troy

Defoe is a primadonna and after any success at RBNY he would invariably settle into his complaining about the team/players/league/whatever. His heart is in England, let him stay there and then join John Terry in China when he’s useless.

  • Daddy yankee

Red bull is going to fall even more once Miami, Atlanta, Minnesota and eventually st.louis come in. Even more once LAFC and Sacramento

    • MTF

Why is that? I thought they were doomed when NYCFC entered the league? Or when the Cosmos began their meteoric rise as New York’s real, organic, extra crunchy, independent club in 2013.

      • Johnny

yet where is the meteoric rise of the the Red Bull only had about 20 years to achieve ? its always hard to root for Fizzy little drinks ya know ?

    • William

RB is done as a franchise. Book it !
