Sky Blue FC Opens Season With a 1-1 Draw Against FC Kansas City

Katy Freels (Frierson)

KANSAS CITY, MO (April 12, 2014) – Sky Blue FC earned its first point of the 2014 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season with a 1-1 draw against FC Kansas City at Verizon Wireless Field at H. Durwood Stadium in Kansas City, Mo. SBFC midfielder Katy Freels scored the equalizer in the 48 minute to secure the tie.

FC Kansas City had the momentum early on in the match and created several scoring opportunities before getting on the board in the 42 minute. FCKC Defender Kassey Kallman had possession inside the box and played the ball into the middle for forward Amy Rodriguez. Rodriguez one-timed her shot into the low right corner of the net, scoring her first goal in the NWSL.

Rodriguez almost converted again before the end of the first half, but Sky Blue FC goalkeeper Jill Loyden made a diving save to keep the score 1-0 going into the locker room.

The New Jersey squad came out stronger in the second half and was able to equalize in the 48 minute. Freels took advantage of an FCKC defensive misclear and placed the ball into the back left corner of the net. Sky Blue FC was able to hold off the Blues for the remainder of the game and earn the tie.

“It was a good team performance,” Sky Blue FC head coach Jim Gabarra said. “There were some team adjustments that were made, like taking Cutshall out and moving O’Hara to center back, but overall we had a good start and were able to come away with a point.”

The Blues outshot SBFC 14-5 and had a 5-2 corner kick advantage.

Sky Blue FC’s next match is on Saturday, April 19 when the NJ squad hosts the defending NWSL Champion Portland Thorns FC at Yurcak Field in Piscataway, NJ. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. ET.
