To the surprise of no one, Sebastian Giovinco has won the Landon Donovan Most Valuable Player award as Major League Soccer’s best player.

Giovinco had 22 goals and 16 assists, leading the league in both categories, in his first season with Toronto FC. He arrived from Juventus in the offseason, and while he was seeing limited playing time for the Italian champs, it was seen as a surprise that someone of his caliber was crossing the Atlantic at the age of 28. His quality was on full display throughout the season.

Three previous players won the award in their first season in the league: Luciano Emilio, Carlos Ruiz, and Alex Pineda Chacon. Last week, Giovinco was named Newcomer of the Year.

Giovinco received a large majority of votes from players, club executives, and the media. Kei Kamara finished a distant second in the voting after his 22-goal season for Columbus Crew SC. Sporting Kansas City’s Benny Feilhaber finished third.

Giovinco is the first TFC player to win Most Valuable Player, and helped the team reach the playoffs for the first time in their nine-year history. He has done everything Toronto could have asked of him.
